Terms of use
These terms cover the Liora app and this website. Reading, the library, and the habit are free. A one-time purchase from the store unlocks the per-book metrics, the monthly review, and appearance.
Acceptance
These terms are between you and Brayan Andrés Ortiz Bastidas, in Cali, Colombia, the person who offers Liora. You accept them by using the app, joining the waitlist, or sending a help message. The download and any payment also follow the terms of the App Store or Google Play.
The contact email is brayanortizbastidas82@gmail.com. How we handle personal data is in the privacy policy.
The service
Liora is a reader for EPUB books, with a daily habit around it: the minutes, the hour, and the days you choose. It runs on iPhone and Android, in English or Spanish, following the language of the phone.
The time left in a chapter, the pace of a book, and the reader type in a monthly review are descriptions. They are not medical, educational, or therapeutic advice, and they are not a promise that you will finish the book or keep the habit.
License
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Liora. You may not sell the app, rent it, or present it as your own. The name Liora, the logo, the interface, and the code belong to Brayan Andrés Ortiz Bastidas, except the open-source pieces, which keep their own licenses. The reader uses Readium under its license.
No account
Liora has no account. The library, the progress, the quotes, the habit, and the appearance stay on the phone. We cannot restore them. Uninstalling the app, or losing the phone, deletes what was only stored there.
A future change
A later version may offer an account or a backup. Before any of the library or the progress leaves the phone for that purpose, we will publish the updated privacy policy and ask you in the app.
If that account arrives, it will not be required to keep a purchase you already made. The store receipt remains the proof.
Books you import
An EPUB you import from your phone stays on the phone. We do not upload it and we do not review it. You are the one who confirms you may read that file. Deleting the book deletes that copy.
The catalog
The catalog offers public-domain books for personal reading inside Liora. A download does not make you the publisher of the file. You may not sell the edition, the cover, or the synopsis, and you may not present them as your own.
English editions come from Standard Ebooks. In those files, the source text and the artwork are believed to be in the public domain in the United States. They may still be protected in other countries. The people who produced the edition dedicate their own contributions to the public domain under the CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Standard Ebooks asks anyone outside the United States to check the law where they are before using the file.
Spanish editions come from eLejandría. eLejandría states that those ebooks are free of copyright restrictions in Spain because more than 80 years have passed since the author’s death, or that they are under an open license. They may still be protected in other countries. eLejandría’s own editions, covers, synopses, and collections belong to that project. Its terms do not allow a third party to use those resources commercially. The copy in Liora is for your personal reading. It does not give you, or anyone else, a right to reuse those resources commercially.
Liora is not Standard Ebooks and is not eLejandría. Neither project endorses Liora. Their names belong to them.
Whether a work is in the public domain depends on the country. Liora does not promise that every title is free of copyright where you are. The catalog can gain or lose a title. A book already on your phone stays there until you delete it. If a title should not be offered, we can remove it from the catalog.
Quotes
A passage you save stays on the phone, with the highlight color you chose. If you share it as text or as an image, that publication is yours. You are responsible for the copyright in the passage you share.
Permissions
- Notifications are local reminders at the time you chose. You can refuse them, and you can turn them off later.
- On Android, focus mode silences notifications and calls only while Liora is open and you have granted that permission. On iPhone, Do Not Disturb depends on the Shortcut you set up yourself. Focus mode does not promise that every alert will be silenced.
- The file picker is used to import an EPUB from the phone.
What is free
Reading, the library, the catalog, the habit, reminders, quotes, and the week and the calendar in Time are free.
A single purchase unlocks three things: the metrics for each book, the monthly review, and appearance, which is the themes and the typefaces. The price is the one the store shows at the time you pay.
The purchase
The unlock is a one-time purchase from the App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google charges you. Liora does not take the payment and does not issue the refund. A refund follows that store’s rules.
The unlock stays on the store account that paid. It is not shared with a family group. There is no Liora account to move it to. After you reinstall, or on another phone, restore purchases with that same store account.
The purchase is a license to use those three features in Liora. It is not the purchase of a book.
Help
Help, in Profile, is where you send a petition, a complaint, a claim, or a suggestion. The email is optional and is used only to reply. If you include one, we answer within two business months. If you do not, we still receive the message and we cannot answer it. The privacy policy says what is stored and for how long.
Intellectual property
The books in the catalog are there on the terms in the catalog section. An EPUB you import remains what it was: yours to read if you have the right, and not ours. A suggestion you send can be used to improve Liora, without any duty to adopt it or to pay for it.
Availability
Liora is provided as it is. The catalog needs a connection. A book already in the library opens offline. We may change, pause, or stop the app or the catalog. Joining the waitlist does not reserve a copy and does not set a release date.
Ending use
You stop using Liora by deleting the app. That deletes what was only on the phone. A purchase remains on the store account until the store says otherwise, and you can restore it if you install Liora again with that account.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for the loss of data that existed only on your phone, for a catalog title being unavailable, or for what you publish when you share a quote. Nothing in these terms removes the rights you have as a consumer. Where Colombian Law 1480 of 2011 applies, those rights stay in force.
Law and language
These terms are governed by the laws of Colombia. The courts of Cali are the forum, except where consumer law gives you a different one.
These terms are published in English and in Spanish. If the two versions differ, the English version controls.
Changes
When these terms change, the new text replaces this page and the date at the top changes. If you keep using Liora after that date, you accept the update. A change that would send the library or the progress off the phone still requires the ask described above.
